Dan Houser Hints at Red Dead 3, But a "Perfect" St...
## Red Dead Redemption 3: Inevitable, But Will It Feel the Same?
The dusty trails of the Wild West might be calling again someday. Dan Houser, co-founder and former lead writer of Rockstar Games, has weighed in on the potential future of the Red Dead Redemption franchise, suggesting a third installment is likely, albeit with a tinge of melancholy.
Speaking to IGN, Houser, who penned the narratives for both Red Dead Redemption and its critically acclaimed prequel, Red Dead Redemption 2, expressed a different sentiment regarding a potential Red Dead Redemption 3 compared to the upcoming Grand Theft Auto 6. While he acknowledges that GTA 6 will be a fresh start, disconnected from his previous work, he views the Red Dead Redemption series as a "cohesive two-game arc." The prospect of someone else continuing that arc, without his involvement, feels "sadder."
"That might be more sad to hear someone working on that," Houser stated, acknowledging the inevitability of the situation. "But again, that will probably happen too. I don't own the IP. That was part of the deal."
Houser's departure from Rockstar Games over five years ago means he's relinquished creative control over the franchises he helped build into global phenomena. While he expects GTA 6 to be excellent, he won't be involved in its storyline or character development.
IGN's Wesley Yin-Poole echoes Houser's sentiment, suggesting that a Red Dead Redemption 3 is almost certain. He points to Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick's previous statements highlighting both GTA and Red Dead as "prominent franchises" that Rockstar Games will revisit in the future.
However, Yin-Poole casts doubt on the return of Arthur Morgan, the protagonist of Red Dead Redemption 2. "His story has been told, I feel," he stated, suggesting a new narrative and potentially a new era for the franchise. The original Red Dead Revolver, released in 2004, predates the established story arc, hinting at the possibility of Rockstar exploring a completely new chapter in the Red Dead universe.
While the future of Red Dead Redemption remains shrouded in mystery, one thing is clear: the franchise holds a special place in gaming history, and its continuation carries a weight of expectation. For now, Rockstar's focus remains firmly on the highly anticipated GTA 6, slated for release in May 2026. But the whispers of a Red Dead Redemption 3, even tinged with a hint of sadness, are sure to keep fans eagerly anticipating the day they can once again saddle up and ride into the sunset.
