Volleyball Federation President Dreams of Stadium Showdown as Turkish Volleyball Soars

Turkish Volleyball Federation President Üstündağ has revealed his ambition to stage a major volleyball championship opening match in a stadium, signaling the sport's growing prominence and national appeal in Türkiye. Speaking with SABAH Sports Director Murat Özbostan, Üstündağ highlighted volleyball's consistent success on the international stage, contrasting it with the fluctuating fortunes of other popular sports like football and basketball.

"Football and basketball are achieving some things after a 20-year break or are trying to achieve them. We are women and men in every championship," Üstündağ stated, emphasizing the consistent performance of Turkish volleyball teams. He further underscored the high expectations placed upon them, even in defeat. "We are second in the world, we are sad as if we were relegated. They ask, 'Why did you apologize?' That apology was because our citizens were upset." This apology, he clarified, was not for losing a match, but for disappointing the passionate Turkish fanbase.

Üstündağ emphasized the sport's burgeoning global brand

Üstündağ emphasized the sport's burgeoning global brand. He recounted a conversation with the Turkish President, who closely follows the team's progress, particularly the men's team's recent victory over Japan. This presidential attention, Üstündağ believes, validates the sport's increasing recognition and support.

He attributed volleyball's success to a combination of factors, including institutional strength, economic stability, effective organization, strong communication, and, of course, on-field achievements. He also pointed to the youthfulness of the national teams, highlighting the bright future ahead. "We have the youngest average age in the world. We have a bright future. A good generation is coming."

From reaching the Olympic semifinals to becoming World Champions in the Nations League, Turkish volleyball has consistently demonstrated its prowess. Üstündağ's dream of hosting a championship opening match in a stadium reflects the sport's ambition to further elevate its profile and solidify its position as a leading sport in Türkiye and on the world stage. The federation's focus on sustainable success, both on and off the court, suggests a commitment to continued growth and a lasting legacy for Turkish volleyball.
