NBC's recent "Wicked: One Wonderful Night" special has proven to be a bewitching success, drawing in a substantial audience and becoming the network's second most-watched special of the year so far. The program, which aired on November 6th, captivated viewers with its celebration of the beloved musical "Wicked," amassing 3.6 million viewers across various platforms within three days, according to Nielsen data. Only February's "SNL50: The Anniversary Special" garnered a larger audience for the network this year.

The special's popularity highlights the enduring appeal of "Wicked" and the anticipation surrounding the upcoming film adaptation. NBCUniversal reports that "Wicked: One Wonderful Night" saw a significant surge in viewership compared to last year's "Defying Gravity: The Curtain Rises on Wicked" special, boasting a 64% increase in overall audience and a remarkable 148% jump in the coveted 18-49 demographic.

A Journey to Oz

Filmed at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, the special transported audiences to the magical land of Oz, offering a sneak peek into the world of "Wicked: For Good," the first installment of the film adaptation set to release on November 21st. The program featured dazzling performances from the star-studded cast, including Ariana Grande, Cynthia Erivo, Michelle Yeoh, Marissa Bode, Bowen Yang, Ethan Slater, and Jeff Goldblum.

More Than Just Performances

Beyond the musical numbers, "Wicked: One Wonderful Night" provided viewers with exclusive cast interviews and behind-the-scenes glimpses of the upcoming film. This combination of entertainment and insider access undoubtedly contributed to the special's widespread appeal. Fulwell Entertainment produced the special, with Ben Winston and Raj Kapoor serving as executive producers.

The network's "Wicked" celebration doesn't end with the special. NBC is further capitalizing on the hype by airing the first "Wicked" film on November 19th at 8 p.m. ET/PT, building even more excitement for the sequel's theatrical release. This strategic programming move underscores NBC's commitment to leveraging the popularity of "Wicked" to draw in viewers and boost ratings.
