Antalyaspor Executive Embroiled in Betting Scandal, Court Records Reveal Shocking Details
Antalyaspor Boss Bets on Himself: Court Docs Expos...
Turkish football is reeling from yet another betting scandal, this time implicating a high-ranking executive at Antalyaspor. Emrah Çelik, a club manager, is accused of betting on his own team, a revelation stemming from a debt dispute with a sports betting dealer. The scandal, initially focused on referees and players, has now broadened to include those in positions of power within clubs, raising serious questions about the integrity of the sport.
The case surfaced when Çelik initiated enforcement proceedings against S.B., an İddaa (sports betting) dealer, over a 2 million TL debt. S.B. countered with evidence presented in court, alleging that the debt was related to betting activities orchestrated by Çelik. This evidence includes WhatsApp messages and bank receipts that paint a damning picture of Çelik's alleged involvement.
Details of the Alleged Betting Scheme
According to court records, Çelik allegedly communicated his betting preferences to S.B. via text message. He purportedly transferred large sums of money from his company account to cover the bets, masking the transactions as "loans" in the transfer descriptions. He then allegedly instructed that winnings be deposited into his personal account, not the company's. The documents reportedly show that Çelik bet a staggering 2.8 million TL in a single month, placing individual bets as high as 600,000 TL.
Betting on His Own Team: A Clear Conflict of Interest
The most explosive allegation is that Çelik bet on the Kayserispor-Antalyaspor match on March 3, 2023, while serving as an executive at Antalyaspor. He allegedly predicted a 4-0 victory for his team and reportedly won 475,000 TL from the bet. The WhatsApp messages submitted as evidence contain what appear to be coded instructions for high-stakes, full-score predictions.
TFF Investigation Looms Over Antalyaspor
The Turkish Football Federation (TFF) is expected to launch its third wave of investigations into betting irregularities, potentially targeting club presidents, executives, and coaches. This allegation against Çelik could put Antalyaspor firmly in the TFF's sights.
Previously, Eyüpspor President Murat Özkaya was arrested in a similar investigation. The TFF may now request a report from its Ethics Committee on Çelik, focusing on the potential "influencing of match results" through betting on his own team. Following the report, the TFF Board of Directors will decide whether to refer the case to the Professional Football Disciplinary Board (PFDK), which will ultimately determine any disciplinary action. The potential penalties are severe, as outlined in the Football Disciplinary Instructions, further underscoring the gravity of the situation for both Çelik and Antalyaspor.
