Wisconsin Sticking with Fickell: AD McIntosh Confirms Coach Will Remain Through 2026

Madison, WI – Despite a disappointing 2-6 start to the 2025 season and a mounting record of underperformance, the University of Wisconsin will stand by head football coach Luke Fickell, Athletic Director Chris McIntosh confirmed to ESPN on Thursday. Fickell, now in his third year at the helm, will remain the Badgers’ head coach at least through the 2026 season.

The decision comes as Wisconsin struggles to find its footing under Fickell's leadership. The team is winless in conference play this year and teeters on the brink of missing a bowl game for the second consecutive season. While the 2025 campaign represents the nadir of Fickell’s tenure, his first two years also fell short of expectations. A 7-6 record in 2023 was followed by a 5-7 showing in 2024, bringing Fickell's overall record at Wisconsin to a lackluster 15-19.

This performance marks a significant departure

This performance marks a significant departure from the program's sustained success over the past two decades. Prior to Fickell, all four previous Wisconsin coaches had either captured a Big Ten title or led the Badgers to an appearance in the conference championship game.

However, McIntosh expressed confidence in Fickell, attributing the program's recent struggles to shortcomings in institutional resources rather than a lack of coaching ability. "This season has caused us all to have to look from within," McIntosh stated. "Luke has had to do that. I've had to do that. He has a willingness to be better. So do I, and so does Wisconsin from an institutional perspective."

The decision to retain Fickell is also likely influenced by the financial implications of a potential firing. Fickell, who received a one-year contract extension last offseason, has six seasons remaining on his deal. Terminating his contract this offseason would trigger a substantial $25 million buyout.

Furthermore, Wisconsin would have faced fierce

Furthermore, Wisconsin would have faced fierce competition in a crowded coaching market, with prominent programs like LSU, Penn State, Florida, and Auburn all potentially vying for top coaching talent.

Wisconsin hired Fickell after the 2022 season, following the dismissal of Paul Chryst. Fickell arrived in Madison with a strong reputation, having transformed the Cincinnati Bearcats into a formidable program, culminating in a College Football Playoff appearance. He compiled a 57-18 record in his six seasons at Cincinnati. The university clearly hopes that Fickell can replicate that success in Madison, and they are willing to give him more time to do so. The next two seasons will be crucial in determining whether Fickell can turn the program around and justify the university's continued faith in his leadership.
