Katie Couric Slams Paramount’s Trump Settlement: "Mortified" by Erosion of Press Freedom

Katie Couric, the veteran journalist and former CBS Evening News anchor, didn't mince words this week when discussing Paramount's recent settlement with Donald Trump over a ’60 Minutes’ interview. She confessed she was “mortified” by the situation, suggesting the timing pointed to an attempt to smooth the path for the company's pending merger with Skydance Media.

Couric Blindsided: Trump Settles "60 Minutes" Spat...

"Trump basically extorted CBS and was successful because they wanted a merger to go through," Couric stated, visibly concerned. Her comments highlight a growing anxiety about the pressures facing a free and independent press in today's media landscape. "This is such a dangerous time for a free and independent press and I do really, really worry about that," she added.

The settlement, a hefty $16 million

The settlement, a hefty $16 million payout back in July, came right as Paramount's deal with David Ellison's Skydance Media was stuck in limbo at the FCC. Interestingly, the commission greenlit the merger shortly after the resolution of the lawsuit, which many observers considered to be lacking in substantial merit.

This isn't the only case of major media companies settling with Trump recently. Remember Disney's $15 million settlement in late 2024 over comments made by ABC's George Stephanopoulos? It seems the former president has discovered a potentially lucrative revenue stream in pursuing defamation suits.

But Couric isn't one to be silenced. During an interview with Today co-host Sheinelle Jones at the Gracie Awards, named for the legendary Gracie Allen, she expressed gratitude for the ability to connect directly with her audience through independent platforms. "I’m so glad that I have this opportunity with disintermediation that I can talk directly to consumers and to my audience," she explained, adding, "Because if I didn’t have it, I would be what Donald Trump calls me – a ‘has been’."

She pointedly referred to the edited

She pointedly referred to the edited '60 Minutes' interview with then Vice-Presidential candidate Kamala Harris, "that had a big impact on the election and made people wonder, appropriately, if she should be a heartbeat away from the presidency,” Couric said today. “You’re welcome.” Ouch.

The Gracie Awards also celebrated a diverse group of female leaders including Rita Ferro (Disney), Connie Orlando (BET), Jenna Weiss Berman (Paper Kite Productions), Valari Dobson Staab (NBCUniversal Local), Martha Benyam (Kino Lorber Media), Alissa Pollack (iHeart) and Michelle Duke (NAB Leadership Foundation).

Couric's candid remarks serve as a stark reminder of the challenges facing journalists today. In an era of increasing media consolidation and political polarization, the ability to "speak truth to power" is more crucial than ever. Let’s hope more journalists follow her lead and continue to hold those in power accountable, regardless of the consequences.
