Major Shakeup: No New F1 Game in 2026, But Don't Panic

Well, folks, buckle up. EA just threw a bit of a curveball at the F1 gaming community. Forget eagerly anticipating a brand-new, standalone F1 2026 title. Instead, the 2026 season, with all its shiny new cars, driver swaps, and regulation changes, is coming as a paid expansion to the already-released F1 25.

Yeah, I know, it's a little different. The news dropped earlier today, and frankly, I had to read the press release twice to fully process it. The good news is that we WILL get to experience the 2026 season in the game, with all the expected bells and whistles. The potentially less exciting news is that it won’t be wrapped in a completely new package.

So, what’s the deal

So, what’s the deal? EA is calling it a “multi-year strategic investment” in the F1 franchise, and they’re promising something big for 2027. The next full game, slated for release that year, is being touted as a “reimagined” F1 experience. They're talking about "new ways to play" and a more "expansive experience," which, honestly, sounds promising, if a little vague right now.

According to Lee Mather, Senior Creative Director at Codemasters, this move is all about capitalizing on Formula 1’s growing popularity. “With Formula 1’s momentum on and off the track, now is the perfect time for us to look ahead and build for the future,” he said. And to be fair, F1 is having a bit of a moment, isn't it?

Now, I get it. Some of you might be thinking, "Wait, so I have to pay *again* for essentially a season update?" It's a valid concern. However, let’s not forget that F1 25 seems to have been well-received. IGN, for instance, described it as the best the series has been since the beloved F1 2020. So, if the expansion builds on that strong foundation, it could be a worthwhile purchase.

Besides, considering the sheer amount of

Besides, considering the sheer amount of work involved in modeling new cars, implementing regulation changes, and updating driver rosters, a paid expansion might be a more efficient way to deliver the 2026 season. Time will tell, of course.

What I'm really curious about is this "reimagined" experience coming in 2027. What exactly does that entail? More open-world elements? A deeper career mode? More customisation options? Hopefully, EA and Codemasters will shed some more light on their plans soon.

For now, though, it looks like we're in for a slightly different F1 gaming experience than we expected. Whether that’s a good thing or a bad thing remains to be seen, but I'm cautiously optimistic. After all, Codemasters has a long and impressive history with F1 games, and I'm hoping they can deliver on their promise of a truly next-level experience. We'll keep you updated as we learn more!
