Ahoy There, Scapers! Sailing Finally Sets Course f...
## Sailing Finally Makes Port in Old School RuneScape: From Meme to Reality
For years, it's been the punchline, the running gag, the skill that would never be. But now, after a decade of memes and wishful thinking, Sailing is officially setting sail in Old School RuneScape (OSRS). That's right, the retro spin-off MMO, known for its adherence to the 2007 era of RuneScape, is getting its first ever *exclusive* skill. And not just any skill, but *Sailing*.
Talk about a sea change! Especially considering the choppy waters and failed voyages of previous skill proposals like Warding, and of course, the original iteration of Sailing itself. Remember that? Ten years ago, Jagex tried to make it happen, but the player polls sunk it. This time, however, it seems the community is ready to hoist the anchors and chart a new course.
The genesis of the Sailing meme is almost as interesting as the skill itself. Back in the day, leading up to the release of Summoning in 2008, rumors and "leaks" were rampant. One particularly elaborate hoax convinced many that Sailing was just around the corner. I still chuckle thinking about it. My personal favorites were the fake website banner showcasing the "Sailing Skill Cape," the introduction of pirate implings (a brilliant touch!), and the infamous Digsite barge. (Ironically, that barge wouldn't actually sail in RuneScape 3 until 2019! Talk about a delayed voyage.)
Jagex, to their credit, played along over the years, even if initially it was all a "no, no, no, Sailing is NOT coming" kind of vibe. Sailing has popped up in April Fool's jokes and the occasional in-game Easter egg, like the sailing mini-game in the Gower Quest in RS3.
So, the arrival of Sailing in OSRS feels different. It's not just another skill release, it's a community in-joke come to life. It’s seeing a digital myth take tangible form.
But how does it *play*? Well, while the movement is still grid-based, the grid is smaller, more refined. Jagex is walking a tightrope here, trying to introduce innovation while keeping that old school feel. And from what I've seen, they're doing a solid job. The classic point-and-click gameplay is still there, but with a nautical twist.
Essentially, you'll need to put your avatar at the helm, then you can set sail. A handy white arrow appears around your boat, letting you choose your direction. You can also adjust your speed with the navigation panel, and even get a speed boost by trimming your sails when gusts of wind appear. It's easy to pick up, but distinct enough to feel like a fresh experience.
Whether Sailing will be a hit remains to be seen. But one thing is for sure: it's already a legendary addition to the Old School RuneScape world.
