Tragedy in Ternopil: Russian Attack Kills Dozens as Zelenskyy Seeks Support in Turkey

KYIV, Ukraine – Just when you thought the news couldn’t get any worse, it does. A devastating Russian drone and missile barrage ripped through the western Ukrainian city of Ternopil overnight, leaving at least 25 people dead, including three children. The attack unfolded as President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was in Turkey, desperately seeking diplomatic support to bolster Ukraine’s defense against the relentless Russian invasion.

Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko reported that the nighttime assault targeted two nine-story apartment buildings in Ternopil, a city relatively far from the front lines – about 200 kilometers (120 miles) from the Polish border. The sheer brutality of the attack is staggering; Klymenko stated that at least 19 victims, including children aged 5, 7, and 16, were burned alive. Heartbreaking.

Emergency services are still working tirelessly

Emergency services are still working tirelessly through the rubble. At least 73 people, including 15 children, were injured, and a worrying two dozen remain unaccounted for. Rescue teams anticipate continuing the search for at least two more days.

The scale of the Russian bombardment is frankly terrifying. Ukraine’s air force reported that Russia launched a staggering 476 strike and decoy drones, along with 48 missiles of various types. While Ukrainian air defenses managed to intercept most of the incoming threats, six cruise missiles still managed to slip through. And it’s worth noting, Western-supplied F-16 and Mirage-2000 jets played a crucial role in intercepting at least 10 of those cruise missiles. It’s a grim reminder of the critical importance of continued international aid.

“Every brazen attack against ordinary life indicates that the pressure on Russia (to stop the war) is insufficient,” Zelenskyy wrote on Telegram. It’s hard to argue with that sentiment.

Simultaneously, Zelenskyy was meeting with Turkish

Simultaneously, Zelenskyy was meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Ankara, a crucial diplomatic mission aimed at further isolating Vladimir Putin and ramping up international pressure. Turkey, a key player in the Black Sea region, maintains relations with both Ukraine and Russia, positioning them as a potential mediator. "We count on the strength of Turkish diplomacy, on (how) it’s understood in Moscow," Zelenskyy said.

Meanwhile, US Army Secretary Dan Driscoll is also in Ukraine for negotiations, accompanied by Army Chief of Staff Gen. Randy George and Gen. Chris Donahue.

Adding another layer to the already complex situation, Romania scrambled two Eurofighter Typhoon jets and two F-16s when a drone entered NATO airspace during the attacks. And Polish and allied air forces were also put on high alert. This incident underscores the real and present danger of the conflict spilling over into neighboring countries.

Russia’s Defense Ministry, predictably, claimed they were targeting Ukrainian energy facilities and military-industrial targets in retaliation for Kyiv’s strikes on Russian territory. It's the same old narrative, but the images coming out of Ternopil tell a very different story. The human cost is undeniable, and the path to peace remains elusive.
