Lebanon's entertainment scene is about to get a healthy dose of dark comedy with Fouad Yammine's directorial debut, "Peanuts" (Batata Chips Aa Festou). The film, a joint venture between Dubai-based Front Row Filmed Entertainment and Beirut's Abajour Productions, promises a wild ride through the streets of Beirut, tackling heavy themes with a uniquely Lebanese sense of humor. As someone who's always appreciated the dark side of comedy, I'm definitely intrigued.

Lebanese Star's Bold Move! 'Peanuts' Film to Shock...

Yammine, already a well-known face as an actor, writer, and comedian (currently touring Europe with the 3aka3ba comedy group, no less!), also stars in "Peanuts." He plays Nouhad, a man in his thirties who's seemingly had enough and decides to document his planned suicide. He hires a struggling cameraman to film his "last night on Earth," leading to what sounds like a cathartic, and potentially disastrous, farewell tour.

The premise alone is enough to raise eyebrows. Nouhad uses his final hours to settle scores, confess his love for his childhood crush, and recount his less-than-stellar experiences with love, law enforcement, and even a philosophical sex worker. What starts as a goodbye quickly devolves into a chaotic, revealing, and supposedly hilarious series of events. By sunrise, the film promises a raw and honest look at a man, and a city, grappling with finding meaning in a world that feels like it's falling apart.

Beyond Yammine, "Peanuts" boasts a strong Arab ensemble cast, including Said Serhan (Al Hayba), Manal Issa (The Swimmers), and Gabriel Yammine (Broken Keys). The film, shot entirely in Beirut, also features cameos from familiar faces in the Arab entertainment world, adding another layer of authenticity and local flavor.

Front Row CEO Gianluca Chakra seems particularly enthusiastic about Yammine's vision. He praised Yammine's "innovative approach," calling it a "breath of fresh air amidst dire times." Chakra, who previously worked with Yammine on "Perfect Strangers," believes in Yammine's ability to blend humor, tenderness, and poignancy in a way that only he can. He also noted that the industry often places creative constraints on writers, so Front Row is betting big on Yammine's unfiltered imagination. Sounds like they're giving him free rein, which could be exactly what this project needs. With a plot this daring, and a team this passionate, "Peanuts" could very well be the dark horse comedy we've been waiting for.
