Okay, let's be honest, watching the Texans-Bills game on Thursday night was… something. It wasn’t a masterpiece, but it definitely gave us a few crucial takeaways, especially regarding Houston's playoff hopes and Buffalo's… well, potential implosion.
Texans Stun Bills in OT Thriller! What Will Happen...
First and foremost, the Texans' defense is legit. Forget the offensive struggles for a minute. They absolutely harassed Josh Allen, sacking him a career-high eight times. Will Anderson Jr. was a disruptive force, and that front line, with Danielle Hunter also wreaking havoc, is a nightmare for any quarterback. They’re the number one ranked defense in the NFL for a reason, and it's this defensive intensity that's keeping Houston afloat. It's a classic case of "defense wins games," and in this case, it might just drag a flawed Texans team kicking and screaming into the playoffs. We'll see if the offense can pull their weight though.
Speaking of defense, that brings us to the second takeaway: the Bills have a Josh Allen problem, or rather, they're not maximizing their assets. Allen can still carry the team, sure, but why force it when you have a running back like Cook? He ripped through the Texans for 116 yards. Cook is on pace for nearly 1,700 rushing yards! He needs to be the engine that drives that offense. The Bills seem too quick to abandon the run the moment they face a slight deficit. It’s baffling. Relying on Cook more takes pressure off Allen and would make life easier for their passing game, especially against a ferocious pass rush like Houston's.
Third, Buffalo's receiving corps is...underwhelming, to put it mildly. Seriously, what were they thinking? It’s astounding that the Bills didn't address their receiver issues more aggressively. Khalil Shakir, their best receiver, had a decent game (8 catches, 110 yards) but also fumbled. He's a solid player, but he’s not a game-changer. For a team with Super Bowl aspirations, this is a glaring weakness. Imagine how much better they would be with a true number one receiver!
Finally, the Bills might be wasting a golden opportunity. They have a talented quarterback, a good running back, and some defensive pieces. But they aren't playing like a team ready to contend for a Super Bowl. The inconsistent offensive play-calling, the lack of a true receiving threat, and the inability to consistently protect Allen – it all adds up to a recipe for disappointment. They need to figure things out, and fast. Or, they are going to see the playoffs from their couch.
