Kimjang Vest Craze! Jennie & Karina's Style Secret SHOCKS Korea!
Current Affairs 21 November 2025

Okay, so who would have thought? The "kimjang vest," that floral quilted number your grandma probably owns (and maybe even wears while making kimchi, hence the name), is suddenly *the* thing to be seen in if you're young and trendy in Korea. Seriously. This is coming from someone who remembers when these vests were the epitome of unfashionable – my own grandmother had a closet full of them!

Kimjang Vest Craze! Jennie & Karina's Style Secret...

Apparently, according to Naver Data Lab, searches for these vests and similar terms like "floral vest" among 19 to 34 year olds hit a record high on November 17th. They use a scoring system where the peak is 100, so that's a pretty big deal. The interest had dipped to practically nothing after a smaller spike last December, but then BAM! - mid-October, the searches went wild again. BlackKiwi, another search analysis platform, confirms this, reporting a nearly sevenfold increase in searches for the vest this month compared to last. That’s a whopping 699.85 percent jump!

What's fueling this unexpected fashion revival? Well, analysts are pointing to a couple of cool cultural shifts. First, there's “choncance,” which is basically young people seeking out rural experiences for relaxation. Think farm stays, visiting countryside villages – that kind of thing. Then there's “halmaenial,” a fashion aesthetic that's all about embracing that grandma-style nostalgia. So, suddenly, the quilted floral vest, once relegated to older women making kimchi, becomes a trendy, almost ironic, statement piece. I guess what's old is new again, right?

And it's not just talk. Rural tourism is actually on the rise. An October report from the Rural Development Administration showed that nearly 44% of Koreans have experienced rural travel, a significant jump from 35% in 2022. It seems people are genuinely craving that connection to the countryside, and the fashion is just a reflection of that.

The buzz is definitely translating into sales. These vests are topping the bestseller lists on popular online shopping platforms like Zigzag and Ably, especially with women in their 20s. And get this – they're not even expensive! You can snag one for as little as 5,000 won (around $4 USD), or splurge on a fancier one for up to 40,000 won. Talk about accessible fashion!

But the best part? The trend has even jumped to pet fashion! Korean underwear brand BYC teamed up with a pet clothing label to release dog-sized kimjang vests. I saw pictures from the launch event – it's absolutely adorable. Who knows, maybe my dog will be rocking one of these vests this winter – just to complete the look, you know? The world keeps spinning, and sometimes, it lands on the most unexpected trends.
