Student Gets Into University With -12.5 Net Score?! How is This Possible!

Alright, folks, buckle up because we've got another head-scratcher coming out of the Turkish higher education system. Remember last year when we talked about students getting into university with practically zero scores? Well, it's happening again, but this time it's even more unbelievable. We're talking *negative* scores here.

Student Gets Into University With -12.5 Net Score?...

According to a report from Mustafa Kömüş at BirGün, hundreds of students have managed to snag university placements despite bombing the University Entrance Exam (YKS). And I mean *bombing*. One student, get this, was admitted with a negative 12.5! I've seen some bad test results in my day, but that’s…impressive, in a morbid sort of way. We're not talking about obscure programs either. Think Computer Programming, Child Development, even Physiotherapy. Seriously, folks, how can someone with negative math skills be trusted to calculate dosages?

This whole situation really shines a light on the much-debated "university in every province" initiative, championed by President Erdoğan. The intention was good – making higher education more accessible. But is it really accessible if the standards are so low that a negative score gets you in? Let's be honest, are we diluting the value of a university degree here? The report indicates that these low-scoring students are overwhelmingly ending up in private universities or those located in Cyprus. Hmmm… something to think about.

Now, let's talk specifics. The student with that record-breaking -12.5 in math? They're heading to Esenyurt University to study Sports Management. I guess you don't need to be a math whiz to manage a sports team? And another student with a -3 in math (still a failing grade!) is going to Haliç University to study…wait for it… MATHEMATICS. I had to read that one twice. You really can’t make this stuff up. I wonder what their first lecture will be like? “Welcome to Calculus 101! Today, we’ll be exploring the concept of negative numbers in… uh… mathematics.”

Adding fuel to the fire is the Higher Education Council's (YÖK) plan to shorten undergraduate programs to just three years. Look, I'm all for efficiency, but with students already entering university with these kinds of scores, are we just setting them up for failure? Are we prioritizing quantity over quality? It's a tough situation, and frankly, it's one that deserves a lot more scrutiny. These students are the future, and we owe it to them to make sure they're getting a quality education, not just a piece of paper.
