Hollywood CRISIS! LA Production Plummets 14% - What's Next?!
Movies & TV Series 25 November 2025

Los Angeles, the entertainment capital of the world, saw a notable dip in film and television production in 2024, according to a new report from FilmLA. The data reveals a 14.2% decline compared to 2023, which, while still a drop, is actually a slight improvement over the steeper 20% fall witnessed the previous year. Of course, we can't forget the elephant in the room: the dual Hollywood strikes definitely left their mark on these numbers.

Hollywood CRISIS! LA Production Plummets 14% - Wha...

The report, officially titled the Scripted Content Study, highlights a broader trend as well. Across the U.S., the release of scripted projects shrank by 13.4% between 2023 and 2024. It's a tough pill to swallow, especially considering the economic impact the entertainment industry has on so many communities. This news arrives just as California ramps up its efforts to revitalize the sector through its expanded Film and Television Tax Credit Program, now offering a heftier $750 million in annual funding and wider eligibility.

For those of you who love the nitty-gritty details, this is the third year FilmLA has conducted this comprehensive study. It meticulously analyzes filming locations for all those shiny, U.S.-produced, first-run, English-language movies and TV shows we binge-watch. The focus is, naturally, on the City of Angels and surrounding Los Angeles County. It's fascinating to see where these stories are actually brought to life.

Breaking down the numbers further, scripted television took a bigger hit. The report indicates a 15% reduction in series releases, going from 365 in 2023 to 310 in 2024. However, there's a silver lining! Theatrical movie releases actually climbed for the second year running, showing a healthy 13% increase (from 199 to 225). It seems like people are still craving that big-screen experience. Streaming movie releases saw a minor 3.5% dip, while TV movie releases experienced a rather significant plummet of nearly 35%. It’s a dynamic landscape, to say the least.

Despite the overall downturn, Los Angeles held its own, even showing some resilience. FilmLA Research points out that a larger slice of theatrical and streaming releases in 2024 were actually filmed right here in LA compared to the previous year. Around 18.3% of all scripted projects released in 2024 originated from our sunny shores, a slight but noteworthy uptick. And get this: the region continues to be a major player in feature film distribution, rubbing shoulders with other industry hubs like New York, the UK, Georgia, and even places as far-flung as Hungary and Australia. So, while the numbers might be down, Los Angeles is still very much in the game. Let's hope that tax credit program can really kick things into high gear in the coming year.
