South Korean politics is rarely boring, and this week is no exception. An opposition lawmaker is fiercely denying allegations that he played favorites with the family of former First Lady Kim Keon Hee in a land development deal dating back a decade. The lawmaker in question, Rep. Kim Sun-gyo of the People Power Party, arrived at Special Counsel Min Joong-ki's office Wednesday to face questioning, and he didn't pull any punches.
Lawmaker Land Deal Scandal: Did Ex-First Lady's Fa...
The core of the accusation? Rep. Kim is suspected of costing the state a pretty penny – specifically, financial losses – by allegedly waving development fees for a 350-unit apartment complex in Yangpyeong, Gyeonggi Province. This all allegedly transpired between 2011 and 2016, a period when Rep. Kim was the head honcho of the county. What makes this particularly juicy is that the project was led by ESI&D, a company with close ties to the former First Lady, being established by her brother and mother.
Rep. Kim, however, is standing his ground. Before entering the Special Counsel's office, he made his position crystal clear to reporters. "Development fees are not subject to a governor's unilateral decision; established procedures must be followed," he stated. He also highlighted the immense pressure public officials are under, adding, "Public officials are under immense pressure and suffering from chronic ailments. I am here to demand an end to this coercive investigation and to ensure the truth is revealed." It sounds like he's feeling pretty targeted.
This whole situation has taken a particularly somber turn recently. An official from the Yangpyeong County office was found dead at his home last month, just days after being questioned by special prosecutors in connection with this very case. It definitely casts a darker shadow over the investigation, and you can't help but wonder about the pressure these officials are facing behind the scenes.
And the investigations don't stop there. The former First Lady's brother and mother are also currently under scrutiny by the special counsel team, so clearly, they're leaving no stone unturned. This land development deal from years ago is causing quite a stir now, and it remains to be seen how it will all play out. One thing's for sure: this isn't the last we'll hear of this story. We'll continue to follow developments and bring you the latest as it unfolds.
