Istanbul – The Istanbul Prosecutor’s Office has escalated tensions in the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict by issuing arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and 36 other high-ranking officials. The warrants, announced Friday, accuse the Israeli leaders of genocide and crimes against humanity in connection with the military campaign in the Gaza Strip.

The move, reported by Turkish media,

The move, reported by Turkish media, alleges a "systematic" campaign of violence against Palestinian civilians. Specific accusations include the bombing of the Turkish-Palestinian Friendship Hospital and the obstruction of humanitarian aid reaching Gaza. Beyond Netanyahu, the warrants target prominent figures such as Defence Minister Israel Katz, National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, IDF Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir, and Navy Commander David Saar Salama.

The warrants are based on evidence suggesting "criminal responsibility for the systematic acts of 'crimes against humanity' and 'genocide' committed in Gaza," according to a statement from the prosecutor's office. While acknowledging the suspects are not currently in Turkey and therefore cannot be apprehended, the issuance of the warrants carries significant symbolic weight and further strains already fraught relations between Turkey and Israel.

Israel has vehemently condemned the warrants as a politically motivated stunt devoid of legal merit. Foreign Minister Gideon Saar, in a statement on X, dismissed the move as a "PR stunt by the tyrant [President Recep Tayyip] Erdogan."

This is not the first time

This is not the first time accusations of genocide have been leveled against Israel. Earlier this year, a UN commission also accused Israel of committing acts that could amount to genocide. Furthermore, Netanyahu, along with former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, already faces an arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague, issued in 2024. These ICC warrants, which also target Hamas leaders, have been rejected by Israel, which is not a signatory to the Rome Statute. The United States, also not a party to the ICC, has actively campaigned against the court, even imposing sanctions on its judges and prosecutors.

The current conflict was triggered by the Hamas-led attack on October 7, 2023, which resulted in the deaths of approximately 1,200 Israelis. The subsequent Israeli military response has reportedly killed over 68,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza's health authorities, further fueling international condemnation and calls for a ceasefire.

While a ceasefire was brokered in early October, violence has repeatedly erupted, resulting in continued casualties on both sides. The issuance of these arrest warrants by Turkey adds another layer of complexity to the already deeply entrenched conflict and underscores the growing international scrutiny of Israel's actions in Gaza.
