St. John's Collapse! Red Storm Implodes vs. Auburn - What Will Happen Now?!
Sports 27 November 2025

St. John's is learning a harsh lesson early this season: ranked opponents are a different beast. The Red Storm, after a promising start, suffered another setback on Wednesday, blowing a halftime lead and falling to No. 21 Auburn 85-74 in the Players Era Championship consolation round. It's their third loss to a Top 25 team this year, a concerning trend for a squad with high expectations.

St. John's Collapse! Red Storm Implodes vs. Auburn...

The game started promisingly for St. John's. They closed the first half on an 11-2 run, taking a 39-30 advantage into the locker room. You could feel the energy, the confidence that had fueled their high-octane offense through the first six games. But Auburn, stung by a massive loss to Michigan the previous day, clearly wasn't going to roll over.

Auburn came out firing in the second half, erasing the deficit with an 11-3 run of their own. From then on, it was a different game. Tahaad Pettiford absolutely exploded, pouring in 27 points, with 16 coming in a decisive 30-13 run that sealed the victory for the Tigers. Keyshawn Hall chipped in with 20 points and eight rebounds, while Kevin Overton added 12. Auburn simply shot the lights out, connecting on 55% of their field goals and a respectable 43% from beyond the arc.

For St. John's, Zuby Ejiofor had a strong performance with 24 points, and Joson Sanon added 16, but key players like Bryce Hopkins and Oziyah Sellers struggled mightily. Hopkins, the preseason Big East player of the year, was held to just nine points on a dismal 2-for-11 shooting performance. Sellers fared even worse, managing only four points on 1-for-7 shooting. The Red Storm's usually reliable long-range shooting deserted them; they connected on just 7 of 25 attempts from three-point land. That just isn't going to cut it against quality opposition.

Coming into the game, St. John's boasted the eighth-best scoring offense in the nation, averaging over 95 points per game. However, they ran into a determined and defensively sound Auburn team. The Tigers, now 6-2, improved to 1-2 against ranked teams this season. On the other hand, St. John's falls to 4-3, and more importantly, 0-3 against ranked opponents. This tournament has been a tough learning experience for the Red Storm, and they'll need to address their struggles against top-tier competition if they want to contend for a Big East title and a deep NCAA Tournament run. They need to find a way to consistently perform against quality defenses. Something to watch as the season progresses.
