LG Shocker: CEO Ousted! Can This Save the Tech Giant?
Current Affairs 27 November 2025

LG Electronics has shaken things up, announcing Lyu Jae-cheol, the head honcho of their home appliance division, as the new CEO. He's stepping into the shoes of Cho Joo-wan, who is bowing out after a four-year run. The board rubber-stamped Lyu's appointment on Thursday, clearly impressed with his steady hand in boosting sales in the home appliance sector. For those keeping score, Lyu was previously president of the Home Appliance Solution division.

This move definitely raised some eyebrows around the industry. Many expected Cho to climb even higher, possibly to vice chairman, especially considering his efforts in shifting LG Electronics' focus from consumer appliances to the more lucrative business-to-business (B2B) market. He was also instrumental in diversifying their income streams, a crucial move in today’s volatile market.

LG Electronics isn't dismissing Cho's contributions, though. They've publicly acknowledged that he "laid the foundation for the company's sustainable growth," adding that his decision to step aside was to ensure a smooth transition. Which, let's be honest, is corporate speak for "we're moving in a different direction, and he's on board with it."

Now, about Lyu. He's an LG veteran, having joined GoldStar (LG Electronics' predecessor) way back in 1989. He's spent more than half of his career knee-deep in research and development, later using that technical know-how to lead business operations and strengthen LG's position in the home appliance game. It seems like a solid choice, tapping someone who understands the nuts and bolts of the company.

Since 2021, he's been steering the home appliance division, managing to keep things stable despite the cutthroat competition in the global electronics market. Over the last three years, the division has seen an average annual sales growth of 7 percent. Not too shabby. One of his key initiatives was LG's platform-based home appliance business, which offered software upgrades for appliances. This program, launched in Korea in 2022 and later expanded to North America and Europe, has seen over 20 million cumulative upgrades worldwide. Shows you the power of ongoing service and improvement, doesn't it?

The company is also pushing hard on its appliance subscription program business, and the numbers are looking good, with revenue from January to September hitting 2 trillion won. Lyu's leadership has been pivotal. In the third quarter alone, the home appliance division reported sales of 6.58 trillion won and an operating profit of 365.9 billion won, up 4.7 percent and 3.2 percent year-on-year respectively. This strong performance, despite external pressures like U.S. tariff worries and rising shipping costs, speaks volumes about Lyu’s ability to navigate tough waters.

Looking ahead, Lyu will be tasked with ramping up the B2B side of things, particularly in areas like heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems. It's clear LG is betting on him to drive growth in these key sectors. To provide support, LG Electronics has also promoted Eun Seok-hyun, head of vehicle components solutions, and Lee Jae-sung, head of energy solutions, to president. The company clearly feels that it is a new era. And with some aggressive moves in recent months, LG is clearly ready to take on the future.
