Oscar Piastri may have just thrown a wrench into Lando Norris's championship aspirations, setting the fastest time in practice for the Qatar Grand Prix. The McLaren rookie outpaced his teammate by a hair – a mere 0.058 seconds, to be precise – in what could be a pivotal weekend for both drivers, and the entire championship, really.
Piastri SHOCKS Norris! Qatar Practice Fuels F1 Dra...
Norris, who's been on a roll lately, is technically still in the hunt for the title. He needs to outscore Piastri and Max Verstappen by two points this weekend to secure the crown. He was clearly pushing hard and looked set to improve on his time, but a costly mistake at the final corner put paid to that. A frustrating moment, I'm sure, given what's at stake.
Meanwhile, the reigning champ, Max Verstappen, seemed to be having a bit of a nightmare. He finished a distant sixth, over half a second off Piastri's pace, and reported a litany of problems with his Red Bull. We're talking gearchange difficulties, damping issues, the whole shebang. Definitely not the smooth sailing we're used to seeing from Verstappen and his team. It makes you wonder what gremlins they'll be chasing overnight.
Veteran Fernando Alonso, ever the wily competitor, slotted into third place for Aston Martin, continuing his trend of strong performances at sprint weekends. It's always a treat to see Alonso still mixing it up at the front. Behind him, Carlos Sainz put his Williams in a respectable fourth, followed by Racing Bulls' Isack Hadjar. Quite a mixed bag in the top five, honestly.
The rest of the top ten saw Alex Albon (Williams), Charles Leclerc (Ferrari), Lance Stroll (Aston Martin), and Kimi Antonelli (Mercedes) follow Verstappen. It was a less-than-stellar showing for Ferrari and Mercedes, with both Lewis Hamilton (12th) and Leclerc complaining about their cars. Leclerc specifically mentioned a lack of feel through his power steering, which can be a driver's worst nightmare on a demanding circuit like Lusail.
Looking ahead, sprint qualifying is just around the corner, and you can bet teams will be burning the midnight oil trying to iron out any kinks. The conditions in Qatar are notoriously tricky, and the margins are incredibly tight. This practice session has certainly thrown up some surprises, and it's anyone's guess how the rest of the weekend will unfold. One thing's for sure: it's shaping up to be a thrilling event.
