The Turkish National Men's Basketball Team is gearing up for a historic milestone. Tomorrow, they'll take to the court for their 1,059th game, facing off against Switzerland in the second match of the FIBA 2027 World Cup European Qualifiers First Round, Group C. That's a lot of basketball!
Turkey's Basketball Team: Game 1059 Could Be Their...
It's hard to believe that it all started way back on June 24, 1936, when Turkey first played against Greece. That's nearly 90 years of hoops history! Over those years, the team has amassed a record of 548 wins and 509 losses, a testament to their dedication and evolution within the international basketball scene. There's even a draw in the mix – a friendly against Macedonia in 1995 that ended with a 78-78 score. I remember those older friendly games; the atmosphere was always a bit more relaxed, a chance to experiment with lineups and strategies.
The team’s first official victory came at the 1949 European Championship in Egypt. After initial losses to Greece and France, Turkey finally found their footing, securing a win against Syria. That first official win must have felt amazing, setting the stage for decades of competition to come.
When it comes to dominating victories, the Turkish team holds a record that's hard to beat. In 1980, at the Islamic Countries Sports Games in İzmir, they crushed Libya with a whopping 142-45 score. A 97-point difference! I can only imagine the excitement in the stadium that day.
Of course, not every game can be a victory. The Turkish National Team has faced some tough defeats over the years. One of their largest losses came against Croatia at the 1993 European Championship, a 50-point difference. Interestingly, they also suffered a similar defeat in a friendly against France just recently, in July 2024. These kinds of losses can be tough, but they also offer valuable learning experiences and fuel the team's drive to improve.
This upcoming game against Switzerland also marks another milestone. It will be the 96th match under the leadership of Ergin Ataman. With Ataman at the helm, the team has achieved 51 wins and 44 losses. Ataman, a highly decorated coach with numerous national and international titles, also guided Turkey to a silver medal at the 2025 European Basketball Championship (EuroBasket 2025). His experience and strategic prowess are undoubtedly a significant asset to the team as they embark on this new World Cup qualifying journey. Here's hoping they can add another win to that record tomorrow!
