Pilota, that quintessentially Valencian ball game you often see being played right in the streets, is about to get a serious boost here in the Marina Alta. A brand-new league, Pilota a Ratlles, is launching this December, and it promises some exciting competition for players and spectators alike. Organized by the Xarxa Esportiva, the comarca's own sports coordination network, this isn't just about reviving a traditional sport; it's about getting people active and connected. Think of it as swapping the couch for a cancha – a win-win, really.

The league itself is divided into two divisions, Primera and Tercera, showcasing the depth of talent and interest across our region. Primera features teams hailing from Laguar, La Vicaría, and Murla, guaranteeing some intense local rivalries. Tercera is equally exciting, with Parcent, Xàbia, Murla (again!), and La Rectoria all fielding teams. It's a testament to the sport's enduring popularity that so many towns are participating. The format is classic home and away, running from now until January, with the grand final set for January 2026. Who will take home the crown? That’s the question on everyone’s lips.

I had a chance to speak with Sergi Brogniez, the president of Xarxa Esportiva, and he emphasized the three main goals behind the league. Firstly, it’s about promoting pilota, of course. But it's more than that; it's about strengthening community bonds and fostering friendships between towns. And lastly, it’s intended to provide a good level of competition, a sort of proving ground for players looking to step up to the Valencian Federation leagues. It's a smart move, nurturing local talent and giving them a platform to shine.

It’s easy to think of these traditional sports as relics of the past, but initiatives like this league prove they still have a vibrant place in our communities. It’s a chance for locals to connect with their heritage, for visitors to experience a unique aspect of Valencian culture, and for everyone to get some exercise and have a good time. So, if you're looking for something a bit different to do this winter, why not check out a Pilota a Ratlles match? You might just find yourself becoming a fan. For the full match schedule, head over to the Mancomunitat de la Marina Alta sports website. See you there, maybe!
